5 Do's and Don'ts in Searching for a New Flat

There are lots of mistakes you can make when searching for a new flat. Keep the following list of Do’s and Don’ts in mind when renting a new apartment.


1. Don’t Go Over Your Budget


You’re always going to want more of something when you are looking at Greensboro apartments, whether it is more space, a better layout, or something a little more updated. The hard part is deciding which things are the most important to you and are actually realistic for your budget. It’s important to have a price in mind before looking for a new apartment—that way you don’t look at things you can’t afford.


2. Do Negotiate the Price


Just because the rent of an apartment is listed for a certain price does not mean that there is no wiggle room. You may be able to negotiate a better rate. Sometimes the landlord may also be willing to throw in incentives to get you to move in, such as a discount on the first month’s rent. You’ll never know what discounts you can get without asking.



3. Don’t Compromise on your “Musts”


When searching for a new flat, you should have a list of musts and wants to help you make a good selection. Don’t compromise on anything on your must list. For instance, if having laundry inside your apartment is important, don’t even look at an apartment that does not have this amenity. It’s important to distinguish between musts and wants before you begin your apartment search so that you end up in an apartment with everything you need, even though you might not get everything you want.


4. Do Consider the Location


Just like in real estate, the location of your apartment is important. It’s ideal to live close to work or school, but if it costs a lot less to live a little further away, that might be a better option for you. Make sure your apartment is located in an area where you will feel safe and that you have easy access to public transportation if you need that.


5. Don’t Underestimate Utilities and Other Living Costs


It’s easy to assume that your utilities will be the same as in your last flat when you move to a new one. This is a big mistake because there are lots of different factors that go into determining the cost of your bills. For instance, larger apartments tend to have larger utility bills. Older appliances also use up more electricity. Your potential landlord should be able to give you a close figure to the cost your utilities will run each month.


This list of Do’s and Don’ts should help you get the things you need in an apartment and also stay within your budget. There are some things you may have to compromise on, but living within your means is the best option.
