Personalize Your License Plates

If you are a fan of the Beatles you might try "FAB 4". Prefer the music of Bono? Then "UUU 222" would be the way to go. Personalized license plates are an excellent way to make a statement each and every time you take the car out of the garage. For a fee, you can purchase personal number plates from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA); they offer a wide variety of combinations. However, it should be noted: the DVLA in the United Kingdom (UK) limits the use of language that may be considered offensive or sexually suggestive. Of course, if one can stay in the realm of general taste, the only limit is your imagination.

Custom plates add flair to your vehicle and are becoming increasingly popular. They are most common on high priced sports cars and sedans made by companies like Porsche and BMW. An owner of a Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano chose “222 NICE" when registering for his plates. Other examples of vanity plates that represent how people feel about their cars include; "2FAST4U," "2QIK4U," "DEPECHE" (French for fast), and "IT XLR8S" (it accelerates). Even businesses have realized the utility of custom plates – they can be a marketing tool.

Interestingly, the most popular prestige plates are sold at auction. A plate that reads "VIP 1" sold for 285,000 pounds to businessman Roman Abramovich, the owner of Chelsea FC. Other plates that have brought a high price include ones used in the movies on cars that belonged to James Bond, like his Aston Martin with the plate "BMT 216K" in the movie Goldfinger.

The DVLA currently reports that it has more than 20 million possible plate number and letter combinations for sale. Due to increasing popularity, licensing agencies now recommend reserving plate numbers now as gifts for future birthdays, anniversaries or other special occasions.
